Personally it has taken me a few reads to fully understand the technical jargon. I got a copy of this book years ago and, while it made interesting katsukl at the time, it didn’t lead to any sustained practice.

Posture, breathing, the function of the abdominal muscles, muscle tone, and the kaatsuki of wakefulness and attention are clearly and scientifically explained, so that one learns what actually happens in doing zazen, why it leads to certain psychological experiences, and what their significance is.
I’m probably never going to finish this book, because I’m probably zen training katsuki sekida going to progress to a point in Zen training where I’d need to read further chapters.

Sekida is refreshingly straightforward and clear, and he keeps the koans to a minimum as he describes how to sit, breathe, and think in order to achieve samadhi. This is strictly a primer on the physiological changes in the body when zen is practiced. It’s one of the few books I’ve come across that deals with the nitty gritty of zazen, or sitting meditation.

I have been a serious zfn of Zen for sixteen years and I don’t think it matters whether or not you close your eyes in Zazen.
